The most important part of speech, right after nouns and verbs, is the adjective. By learning about French qualifying adjectives, your students will be able to express their ideas more accurately.
Today’s post is about a fun and engaging way to assess the recognition of French qualifying adjectives in sentences.
French Qualifying Adjectives Clip Cards
Qualifying adjectives are the ones that, well, qualify a noun or pronoun. They’re usually right next to the word they’re describing, but not always.
In order to understand and learn things, students look for rules and patterns that can guide them, so they might think: “Oh, ok, adjectives are always next to nouns/pronouns”, or “Adjectives always come after the words they’re qualifying”.
We know that’s not how it works.
This set of 36 clip cards presents students with simple sentences in which there’s only one qualifying adjective, but the adjectives are placed at different points of the sentence. Most of the times they’re right after the noun, but you can also find them before the noun, and with words in between them and the nouns (like verbs and adverbs).
For example:
- …le ballon rouge (after the noun)
- …un beau chapeau. (before the noun)
- …diamant très rare. (after the noun with an adverb in between)
- …grenouille est verte. (after the noun with a verb in between)

Students look at one card at a time and this keeps them from feeling overwhelmed because they can focus on one sentence only.
They can “clip” the right answer with a clothespin or a paper clip. This is extra fine-motor practice for your younger students.
You can also laminate the cards and have kids use dry-erase markers.
You can let students self-check the answers by placing a little sticker or dot behind the right answer before laminating. This way, they just need to turn the card around to see if they got the question right or wrong.
