And that will make them learn, practice, or review French sounds?
Keep reading for more details about this fun 4-in-a-row game to work on “les sons français”.
As they say: kids learn best when they’re having fun! 😉
French Phonics Game
You and your students are probably familiar with the game 4-in-a-row.
You know, the one where players need to get four counters in a row (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally).
Here’s a phonics-focused version of this game, with a spinner/dice variation.

French Phonics Game: How to play
First, pair up your kiddos and give them one of the boards.
You can decide between having them use the spinner version or the dice version.
By spinning the spinners or rolling the dice, they’ll get a sound.
First, students need to pronounce the sound.
Next, they’ll find an image on the board that includes the sound they got.
Then, they’ll either cover it with a cube, chip, or any other manipulative. If they’re playing with a laminated board, you can have them use dry-erase markers to circle or cross the image.
The first student to get four images in a row is the winner.
Currently, there are 20 boards to contrast the following sounds:
- A x AI x AU
- OI x ON x OU
- E x É x È
- G dur x G doux
- C dur x C doux
- I x U
- B x P
- O/ AU / EAU x AN/EN/ AM/EM
- CH x GN
- M x N
- AN/EN x AIN/IN
- AU x EU x OU
- S x Z
- B x BR x BL
- C doux X CR x CL
- D x T
- F x V
- CH x PH x TH
- O x OU x U
- L x R
❤️ Your students will love playing the games without even realizing how much phonics practice they’re getting.
They’ll get better at recognizing French sounds in words. They’ll roll a grapheme (print) and search for the phoneme (sound).
❤️ And you will save time because all you have to do is print and go!
